The One Day Symposium on “Recent
Trends in Applied Chemistry (RTAC-2013)” was conducted successfully on
31 st August, 2013. The event was inaugurated by Dr. B. Satyanarayana,Vice Chancellor, Dr. E. Kannan, Registrar and Dr. O.P.
Bajpai, Dean Academics, with the lighting of lamp followed by release of
‘Proceedings’ consisting of papers covering divere
fields of chemistry. They have given inspiring speech on the role of
applied chemistry and its significance and appreciated the organizers
and the department for an attempt to gather the scientists,
academicians, research scholars and students to focus on the challenges
to be taken up on the theme. The invited speakers Dr. S.
Balasubramanian, Dept. of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Madras,
Chennai, Dr. V. Suryanarayana, Scientist, electroorganic Division,
CECRI, Karaikudi and Dr. R. Srinivasan, Scientist and Head,
BioOrganicDivision,CLRI, Chennai have delivered highly informative
lectures which are beyond our knowledge. Our heartfelt thanks are due to
them for accepting our invitation and sparing their valuable time
inspite of their busy schedule.
Around 65
participants have taken part in this event and papers
werecontributedfrom a variety of themes pertaining to the applications
of chemistry and presented the same in oral and poster presentations.
Dr. S. Balasubramanain has delivered a wonderful and thought provoking lecture on ‘ Controlled Drug Delivery with Polymer Nanoparticles’ where he has discussed about the various problems such as less bioavailability, higher dosage etc being faced by the pateints during treatment of various ailmentsby the administration of drug encapsulated in a biodegradable polymer nanoparticle either orally or subcutaneously. He has brilliantly explained as to how the drug encapsulated polymer nanoparticle releases the drug into the system over an extended period thereby increasing the dosage intrerval. It was an oustanding lecture.
Dr. V. Suryanaray has delivered a higly informative talk on ‘Boron doped diamond- A novel electrode material’ where he discussed theimportant characteristics of the Boron doped diamond (BDD) that can be used for the new oxidation reactions which are otherwise not possible on other electrodes in water medium. He has excellently covered the applications of diamond electrode for various electro organic and inorganic synthetic processes and enlightened us with his instructive speech .

Dr. R. Srinivasan has delivered a magnificent lecture on ‘Application of Organic Compounds: An Overview’ and
discussed about the applications of drugs including antibiotics, the
role of vitamins in biochemical reactions, the electronics such as
laptops, cell phones, calculators and TV screens which are specific
combinations of organic molecules and the change in their shape when an
electric current is applied to them, Life jackets and fire suits which
are made of organic based compounds in safety and defence and many more.
We are highly thankful for his edifying speech.
